Manchester City have strongly denied Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp’s claims that they forced Spurs to drop their efforts to sign Craig Bellamy.

Redknapp claims City threatened to out-bid Tottenham for then-Wigan midfielder Wilson Palacios if Spurs competed for West Ham’s Bellamy in January 2009.

"City said: ‘If you do not drop out of Bellamy, we are going to sign Palacios’," said Redknapp.

City have instructed their lawyers to look at Redknapp’s comments.

"City have made a robust response, strongly denying the claims," said BBC sports news correspondent Gordon Farquhar.

"City say Wigan approached them offering Palacios, while Spurs were in mid-negotiation for him, and that they briefly considered, but swiftly rejected any move for him.

"The Premier League say it is unlikely they will investigate the allegations."

Striker Bellamy moved to Manchester City from West Ham in a deal thought to be worth £14m on 19 January 2009, two days before Palacios completed a £12m switch to Tottenham.

"They said: "If you pull out of Bellamy, we will pull out of Palacios and then we both get a player," said Redknapp.

"We had no choice really. They just said ‘We will blow you out of the water’.

"They have got the backing, they have got the clout to do that, they can do it if they want somebody."

But at the time of the moves Mark Hughes, then Manchester City manager, rejected claims that the clubs had colluded to avoid bidding against each other for either player as "cheap shots".

Wilson Palacios

Hughes bought another defensive midfielder, Nigel de Jong of Hamburg, on the same day Palacios sealed his move to Tottenham.

De Jong is one of a string of expensive acquisitions made by City since the Abu Dhabi United Group, backed by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, agreed a takeover on 1 September 2008.

The club splashed out a British record £32.5m to sign Robinho from Real Madrid later the same day.

Strikers Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz were recruited last summer for a total of about £68m.

While Joleon Lescott, thought to have cost about £22m from Everton, and Kolo Toure, a £14m buy from Arsenal, were added in defence.

Tottenham play City on Wednesday in a match that may decide fourth place.

Redknapp’s side travel to Eastlands in possession of the final Champions League qualification spot with City just a point behind.

The match is the penultimate game of the season for both sides with City and Tottenham travelling to West Ham and Burnley respectively on the final day.

Tottenham have to decide whether to play Ledley King against Bolton or save him for the crucial midweek trip to Manchester City.

Spurs may hand Aaron Lennon his first start of 2010 following his return from a persistent groin injury.

Bolton’s Stuart Holden could return to action for the first time since he fractured his fibula two months ago.

Manager Owen Coyle has injury doubts over Chris Basham, Ricardo Gardner and Andy O’Brien.

MATCH PREVIEW

Tottenham’s race for the remaining Champions League spot is entering the final furlong and the finishing post is in sight.

Seven points from their final three games would not only secure fourth place, but would also give them their best points return in a league season for 25 years.

That game (v Man City) will have a huge impact on who finishes fourth… We are the closest team to it, and if we go there and get a result we are halfway there

White Hart Lane will be a pit of nerves. Tottenham fans know that although three points against Bolton are crucial, Wednesday’s encounter away at their rivals for fourth, Manchester City, is the one they must not lose.

Bolton will not be a pushover, despite Owen Coyle’s men only securing their top-flight status last weekend. Coyle refused to celebrate, saying his aspirations for the club are higher than just staying in the league.

His opposite number, Harry Redknapp, may be casting anxious glances at his watch during the first half at White Hart Lane, but it will have nothing to do with the events on the pitch. His horse, Arry’s Orse, competes in the first classic of the flat racing season at Newmarket.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• This will be the 98th league meeting between the sides. Tottenham have won 42 of those, Bolton 36 and there have been 19 draws.

• Four of the last seven meetings between these sides have ended in a draw, but Tottenham beat Bolton 4-0 in February in an FA Cup fifth-round replay at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham

• They have won seven of their last nine league matches, but have kept only one clean sheet in their last eight league games.

• Spurs have given away nine penalties in the league this season, a joint-high.

• When Harry Redknapp’s team have scored two or more goals in their home games this season they have won the match, but when they have scored fewer than two they haven’t won.

• If selected, Jermain Defoe will be making his 400th career appearance. His present tally comprises; 105 matches for West Ham, 31 at Bournemouth, 36 for Portsmouth and 227 in two spells at Tottenham, scoring 169 goals in total.

• Gareth Bale has been named Barclays player of the month for April. He scored the decisive goal in both 2-1 wins over London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.

Bolton

• Bolton have failed to score in seven of their last nine away matches in the league.

• The Trotters won 18 points this season in the 18 games Gary Megson was in charge of and they have 18 points from the 18 matches since Owen Coyle has been at the helm.

Wigan will be without Gary Caldwell for the visit of Arsenal, with the defender completing a three-game ban.

Latics midfielder Hendry Thomas is still struggling with a thigh injury and is rated doubtful.

Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss the rest of the season after picking up a calf injury.

Midfielder Denilson is a doubt with a groin problem but Robin van Persie could start after an impressive cameo in the defeat at Tottenham.

MATCH PREVIEW

Arsenal have been written off as title contenders on countless occasions this season but Wednesday’s defeat at Tottenham appears to be the final nail in the coffin.

There’s too much to do now, we’re very unlikely now to win the championship

Manager Arsene Wenger admits their Premier League challenge is over, and the bookies agree, making the Gunners odds-on to end the season empty handed.

Arsenal did stage a late rally at White Hart Lane following Robin van Persie’s second-half introduction, but it was not enough to snatch a point.

Things could have turned out very differently had the Dutchman stayed fit this season. The Gunners averaged over three goals per league game until van Persie was injured on international duty in November, but have never quite hit those heights during the five months he spent recovering from ankle ligament damage.

Wigan are inching their way towards safety, though boss Roberto Martinez may regard Wednesday’s goalless draw with Portsmouth as two points dropped.

The Latics may be in poor form but they have already beaten Chelsea and Liverpool on home turf this season. They will also draw confidence from the absence of first-choice Arsenal centre-backs Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Arsenal have won eight of their nine league meetings with Wigan, the exception being a goalless draw away to the Latics in March 2008.

• Wigan’s only previous victory against the Gunners was a 2-1 win in a Carling Cup semi-final first leg in 2006. Paul Jewell’s side went on to reach the final on away goals.

Wigan

• The Latics have only won two of their last 14 Premier League games.

• Roberto Martinez’s side have failed to score more than one goal in any of their last 14 Premier League matches, and have managed only four in their last 10 outings.

• Wigan have thrown away 19 league points this season, the joint highest figure in the Premier League along with Stoke.

Arsenal

• Defeat at White Hart Lane was the Gunners’ first loss in nine league games. However, they have only kept two clean sheets in their last 13 away league games.

• The loss to Spurs was the eighth successive league match in which the Gunners scored in the final 10 minutes.

• The Gunners have lost only one of 17 matches against sides in the bottom half of the Premier League. That was the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland in November.
